In Mandarin they sound rather dissimilar, but I know there are different dialects where they sound identical. Shanghainese is sort of like that. My whole experience there was one long '什么?' if you know what I mean........ 90% of what I said in China: "对不起","再说一遍",and "such and such 汉语怎么说?“ Survival Chinese, right there. Also "谢谢" of course. When in doubt, say thank you.)
