I'm Liah and new to the game! I went a little crazy I guess, as I'm bringing in two new people. First, England from Hetalia (journal: sod!!) He'll be in house #1476. If you don't know the series, he tries (tries) to be a gentleman but really he can swear better than most and also is a closet pervert I g u e s s.

Second is Fushimi from K - unlike the others from K, he's not in HOMRA as he left those losers long ago He's a friendless loser though who is far too obsessed with his ex-bff so there ... you go. He'll be in house #1436!

(Really! I'm actually in my office at my school right now DSGDFSG But yeah I'd be willing to talk about it. I haven't had a great experience to begin with, but when things get sorted it should be okay. Haha Chinese... I took it for 5 months around 3 years ago and forgot it all... I'm doing better than the other teachers in my group but I'm still pretty bad. dfkgjfg)

(Would it be okay if I added you on plurk? I am really curious about this - for a whole variety of reasons, among them the fact that it is interesting to hear first-person accounts about this. I'm sorry to hear it's been rough though! ... I've been taking Chinese for a year and a half now and I feel like I can barely speak at all, haha. I can read a lot! But yeah, the speaking....)

(of course! go right ahead :) a lot of things go differently, like i have friends here who came with the british council who had no problems, so it depends on the company you use etc... but thanks ;u; Ahhh yeah i found reading/writing so much easier. sob.)

(Huzzah! I will do that now! And yeah, that makes sense. I came to Shanghai with a huge group and I feel like it would've been a wholly other experience had I been alone. Researching programs/companies is like wading through a minefield somehow, too. dsjfgdf I came off a few semesters of Japanese, so when I went to start reading Chinese, it was the most beautiful thing. So much easier....)

I have no problem with that. Magic, sure. I buy it. It works.

(Excellent! Yeah, the company I used has too many teachers and too few working for them, so their organisation is... Really Bad. I was rushed to Hong Kong as my visa expired Friday... and I left... Friday............. but yeah I used an agency that worked with this company. I mean there are some good points, but bad points too. Though agreed! I did basic Japanese for a year but I found that harder than Chinese because of all the hirigana and katakana too [squints])

(Oh yikes. That sounds like a logistical paperwork nightmare, honestly. Hopefully everything is smoother sailing from here on out!! Also I went and added you. Reading Japanese with the hirigana/katakana and the multiple readings of everything and all the ten thousand verb forms and... yeah. Chinese doesn't even really do tenses. Just say 了 a lot!! - this is actually what my teacher says to do....)

(It was a huge nightmare... I got my new visa on tuesday and got back to shenzhen at like 9pm too sob. added back o/ but yeah, Chinese is so good for that. I definitely prefer it for grammar and reading/writing... Speaking though 8( I confused 4 and 10 when someone was speaking the other day...)

(Oh gosh, it sounds it!! Ugh. Seriously, good luck in the future!! sdjkgdf Four and ten are only one letter apart when romanized, so that totally makes sense to me!! In Mandarin they sound rather dissimilar, but I know there are different dialects where they sound identical. Shanghainese is sort of like that. My whole experience there was one long '什么？' if you know what I mean........ 90% of what I said in China: "对不起"，"再说一遍"，and "such and such 汉语怎么说？“ Survival Chinese, right there. Also "谢谢" of course. When in doubt, say thank you.)

(I suppose that's good?? At least they didn't go through a repeat performance? And oh my gosh, I know what you mean, yes. I've had teachers from all over China and I know just what you mean. I have a teacher from Beijing, one from Nanjing, one from Chongqing... they all speak different Chinese!! Shanghainese just does what you said, but backwards. They both sound like si. So it's like "laosi" and such. The money thing... I totally did this several times and had to have my money counted back to me like a toddler. I SLOWLY LEARNED. Another funny thing, haha- our teacher never formally taught us 不明白 before we left for Shanghai. We had written the phrase 不听懂, but we didn't know what 不明白 meant for the longest time. Which is... pretty ironic. I bet you get this a lot: you say three words in Chinese and they get SO EXCITED and start talking a mile a minute? That happened to me a ton.)

(Yeah exactly :( It's still not great, but it's better than what us as the first 9 went through sob.... but screams yeah ... it's hard enough as it is!!!!!!!! omg laosi.... I'd cry. At least they pronounce that part here. Most people do say si instead of a shi-like sound but this one guy... then he laughed at me?!?! I did so well too... I knew the other number was 6 8( Yeah we were only told 谢谢 ... Like literally Just That. I knew 不明白 from my classes before, as well as 什么... It's tough. HAHA YES they do... I just kind of cry inside every time.)

Oh, right, Chen-laoshi. Got it. Sometimes though... we had some really weird lost in translation moments pffft. I think the important thing is to just try very hard to be as flexible as possible about that kind of thing. Most people we met were patient enough to try and work it out with us. And, in my experience, everyone in Shanghai and ESPECIALLY in Nanjing became very excited about practicing English on us. But my gosh, they threw you to the wolves, didn't they sdkfgsdf Are you taking Chinese while you're there or just kind of picking it up as you go?)

But yeah, for the most part a lot of people here can speak at least a little english. Enough to get by, anyway. (I don't know if you can access it, but yellowbridge.com is a good site for character drills. We all use it a lot in my class. AND YES miming. Your skill at charades will go up by 1000%. I bet you'd do better on your own at that rate, gosh. If you can't get access to yellowbridge, I can see if I can find some others my classmates have used. There are a lot of good resources online.)
